Chapter Thirteen

Maddie laid across the bed in Island and Colie’s guest room replaying the events from the night. The night started off so right with them having a great time, but like everything else in her life, shit always turned from sugar to shit within minutes.

Maddie was just about to close her eyes when her phone vibrated indicating a text message came through. Rolling over, Maddie reached for her phone on the nightstand seeing it was a text from Cash.

Cassius: Are you good?

Me: Yes.

Cassius: What happened back there?

Me: It’s so much shit going on I don’t think you’ll understand.

Cassius: Try me.

Me: Too much shit to text.

I’d rather have quality than quantity. Ohh I just want someone to keep it real with me. Is that too much? Maddie watched her phone ring in her hand playing Tink’s ‘Treat Me Like Somebody’ as Cassius’ name flashed across the screen. She didn’t know if she wanted to answer or not. Then she thought of the kisses he placed on her lips at the club.

“Hello,” Maddie answered trying not to sound too anxious.

“Sorry, I’m calling you so late. I just had to make sure you were straight,” Chad spoke into the phone sounding sexy as hell.

“Yeah, I told you that already,” Maddie said with an attitude.

“You’re too beautiful to be walking around being so angry.”

“Angry?” Maddie questioned. “You barely even know me.”

“That’s because you’re too angry to get past other bullshit. You won’t let me get to know you.”

“You right I don’t see the purpose. I’m pretty sure you’re like the rest.”

“May I ask who fucked you over so bad?” Cash questioned.

“Life,” was Maddie’s only answer.

“Come on, beautiful, it can’t be that bad?”

“So what do you call my parent dying a couple of days after my eighteen birthday? What about my little sister being laid up in the hospital in a coma? Or the fact that I was shot a couple of weeks ago by my ex, while the man I considered my boyfriend confessed that he had a baby on the way with his longtime girlfriend that I knew nothing about. Shit sounds pretty bad to me, and it feels even worst,” Maddie said telling her life story in a short and small summary.

“Damn.”

“Yes, so don’t judge a book by the cover. My beauty has nothing to do with my struggle.” Maddie spoke sounding defeated.

“Well, it sounds like you could use a friend more than ever right now, yet you’re pushing me away.”

“My trust is fucked up so what can I say?”

“Yes, I’m starting to see why. Look, Madison, I won’t sit on this phone trying to convince you that I’m different. I want my actions to show that. I understand you are going through a lot, and if I could be of any help, I would love to be your friend.”

“Has anyone ever told you that you’re cocky as fuck?” Maddie said laughing trying to lighten the mood.

“Not cocky, confident. So what do you say, can I at least get a chance
